We source from a family-owned business that values that the production of teas is done in a safe, sustainable, & responsible way without detriment to our environment. See below for the process of our teas

The Process

The tea leaves we source are grown above 4000 feet above sea level (these are referred to in the tea industry as 'High Grown Tea'). Above this altitude pesticides are not normally used in tea cultivation, (aka Pesticide Free).

High Grown conventional tea estates do use fertilisers, but these are primarily natural nitrogen pellets. Nitrogen pellet fertilisers can double or even triple tea leaf yield compared to the leaf yield achieved where nitrogen pellets are not used.

The use of nitrogen allows the High Grown tea estates to produce good leaf yields and to continue to employ thousands of workers. The tea estates are located in remote rural areas and are often the most major employer, indeed often it is these tea estates that are the only employer. The High Grown tea estates we deal with provide housing, schooling, medical (usually short-term stay hospitals) and pharmacy facilities free of charge to their workers. These provisions are a huge benefit to the employees and their families who otherwise would not have ready access to this level of support.

High Grown organic cultivation leaf yields are 50% less compared to estates using natural nitrogen fertilisers. If the yields on all the High Grown tea estates were cut in half there would be a reduction in the need for the larger work force creating unemployment and loss of benefits to many families.

Sustainability of Products

Rennie Tea Co sources their teas from a premium tea supplier based out of Scotland.  They have worked hard to manufacture and supply products that help to protect the world’s natural resources and habitats.

Under the guidance of the UK government organization, Envirowise and Trading Standards, they have worked to produce packaging that has the least impact on the environment, but at the same time will be able to keep and store tea in as fresh a condition as possible.

Where possible, all packaging used is already recycled and is bio-degradable. This includes all materials used in the making of the pyramid tea bags*.

  • Clear view woven pyramid tea bags and non-woven tea bags are manufactured from the plant-based material PLA. This is a back garden compostable and biodegradable material woven from strands derived from corn or sugarcane.

    The string is also PLA, while the tag is composed of paper and PLA material.

    The teabag and string material are certified compostable based on the international standard ISO 14855 and the European standard EN 13432.

    Tea bags are vacuum packed in a custom bag that controls atmospheric pressure. This bag protects them from moisture, oxygen, and light.

Natural Flavors

The handpicked selection of our high-quality teas, and where the flavoring is used, only sources flavoring that is described as ‘Organic Compliant’. This phrase ‘Organic Compliant’ means that the flavors are 100% natural and do not contain any synthetic solvents, carriers, or preservatives. This does not mean though that the flavors are organically certified – that is a separate certification process and is independent of the flavor descriptions being organic in nature.

Ethically-Sourced

The Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP) is a membership organization working with tea companies, development organizations, and governments to improve the lives of tea workers, farmers, and their environment.

 The aim of the ETP is to drive forward long-term, systematic change across three thematic areas in tea-economics, equality, and environment. As well as supporting communities on the ground with their programs across Africa and Asia, ETP also leads the sustainability agenda by piloting business innovations and influencing policy. 

ETP's work improves the progress that is being made toward attaining the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals in tea-growing regions

Climate Change

We aim to be at least carbon-neutral and as such all materials and suppliers are assessed in relation to their manufacturing processes and recycling practices. Recent assessments show 80% of main suppliers have offset processes in place that yield them carbon-negative.
